Yellowstone Bend Ranch is located on the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana. Our clients, active environmentalists and enlightened developers, hired us to create a master plan for a “conservation development” that accommodated a limited number of home sites and shared amenities residents, with the bulk of the ranch to be put into a conservation easement and held in common. We were also hired to develop schematic designs for the homestead, the landscape, trout pond, house, and barn. We designed a pedestrian community organized to reveal the history and ecology of the site. A pedestrian path connects a reconstructed wetland at the edge of the prairie with a pavilion near the river; the renovated homestead is at the midpoint. Residents can experience the natural diversity of the site, utilize the amenities, and visit with neighbors, all without driving.
